As we know, sugar is one of the most addicting substances on the planet. Every year around this time I find my body craving sugar. Some theorize that when you’re craving sugar you’re actually lacking Vitamin C. And while the increased need for Vitamin C could be part of the problem, I think more of it has to do with the increased amount of sugar and carbohydrates that are typically consumed at the holidays . Below are the top 10 ways I recommend to break the addiction.
- Throw out all leftover baked goods and sweets
- Meal prep. If good food is around, people are more apt to go for it
- Increase exercise. Sweat sessions are key to breaking bad habits
- Increase good fats. This helps stave off cravings for sweets
- Keep a bar of 88% dark chocolate broken up in the fridge. One small square of that/day can hit the spot
- Don’t fully deprive yourself. Friday, Saturday and Sunday I allow myself one small treat besides the dark chocolate
- Do a formal detox
- Shop the perimeter of the store. If there are no bags or boxes of carbohydrate-laden snacks in the house, they will not be eaten
- Practice intermittent fasting
- Take a probiotic. By increasing the good bacteria in the gut, you are adding protection against the yeast and bad bacteria, which thrive on sugar
