I have recently been reading a lot about the concept of grounding. This is an ancient practice that used to be intrinsic to human behavior but has since become nearly obsolete. In this context grounding refers to the practice of reuniting the human body with the Earth (also known as “earthing”).
We spend so much time with shoes on, walking around on concrete, tile and other flooring not realizing that the connection to the Earth actually does something wonderful to the human body. It has been shown to reduce inflammation, improve immune function and mood, and reduce chronic pain and stress, amongst others things.
You may be wondering what the easiest ways to ground yourself are. As you can imagine walking barefoot in the sand, especially right by the ocean is high on the list. Even walking barefoot in the grass in your backyard can be very beneficial. They also now make grounding mats, or earthing mats, which help impart the same benefits while working or sleeping. I have not yet tried these but I am certainly intrigued. At the very least I try to spend a few minutes each day reconnecting with the Earth.
