Simplifying is rewarding. Sometimes when I fly the friendly skies I am reminded of how very little I really need. I never check a bag. I actually find it a welcome challenge to pack carefully enough to live for a week (if need be) out of my carry-on. The only exception to this plan of attack is if you are going on a week-long skiing trip. With that said, below are my ten essentials for traveling light:
- A carry-on suitcase with 4 moving wheels- because pulling it behind you isn’t always the best method. Dimensions required to bring luggage on-board are 22” x 14” x 9’.
- A garment plan of attack: Only the under garments need to be in full supply. The rest is a game of picking a color scheme and going with it. Layers are key, as are a single versatile jacket. Sneakers, flip-flops, evening shoes and travels shoes are all that’s allowed in the footwear department.
- A systematic approach to packing- I use the rolling method; others prefer packing cubes.
- Toiletries- anything that comes in mini-size or can be transferred to mini-containers. (3.4 oz (100ml) or less is the requirement for transportation on-board an airplane).
- A backpack or large purse- must fit under the seat in front of you and be able to comfortably hold the remaining five items listed below.
- Electronics- laptop, smartphone, charging cord, wall adapter, portable charger, headphones and the app of whichever airline you’re flying.
- Reusable Water bottle- refill stations are everywhere these days, (NB- it must go through security empty).
- Gum and snacks- for take-off, landing and mid-flight fuel.
- Hand sanitizer and/or wipes- for obvious reasons.
- A scarf and/or hoodie – to aid with warmth and double as low back support- and for flights longer than 4 hours, a blow-up neck pillow.
