I know it is a challenge for many people to declutter and simplify their surroundings. In any age when you can get what you want at the press of a button, I think it is increasingly more important to spend a little time getting things down to a simplified place, where there are less distractions and just less “stuff”. Below are some simple strategies that can be used to declutter a few areas of your life.
To declutter your desk:
- Make piles based on accounts with colored post-its, designating a different color for each account. Keep as much unrelated paperwork in a desk drawer or other file cabinet.
To declutter your closet
- Turn every hanger in your closet around so that the tip faces out. Every time you wear something put it back in the right way. At the end of the year you will know what you have not worn. On a daily basis, if you go to try something on and it doesn’t fit right or feel right, keep a donation bag in your closet or bedroom and put that item directly in there. Donation trucks will happily come to your home. I like donating to the Military Order of the Purple Heart through https://www.gogreendrop.com/
To declutter your mind
- Sit up tall, close your eyes and take three deep breaths. Make sure the breath comes from deep in your lungs, from your diaphragm. Bring the breath in a count of four, hold the breath it in for four more seconds, then exhale for a count of eight. This clears the mind, and as a bonus calms the nerves and resets posture.
To declutter your day
- Write down your action plan, and be specific. Outline your day, from exercise to calls to meals. Some people like doing it first thing in the morning, others before bed, and still others before they leave work at night. Find what works best for you and do it. The key… (as Nike says)…”Just Do It”! Then even if things pop up throughout the day, you still have a guideline to which you can refer back.
