CBD oil is popping up everywhere. Most health food stores and pharmacies carry it, and soon it will be making it way into more mainstream stores like CVS and Walgreens. In case there was some confusion about it, I thought this would be a great opportunity to look at it a bit more closely.
CBD stands for Cannabidiol. It is one of the many substances found in the hemp- aka cannabis- plant. In total, there are 85 different chemical substances known as cannabinoids in the hemp plant. The most well-known- and what makes up the bulk of the cannabinoids- is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD is the second-most abundant cannabinoid in said plants. Unlike its sister cannabinoid THC, CBD is completely legal in every state.
CBD is known to be calming, anti-inflammatory and a pain-reducer. It works by triggering the endocannabinoid system, a system that naturally resides in the human body and helps maintain a stable internal environment and regulate hormones. There are receptors in many places throughout the body, including but not limited to the brain, organs, connective tissues and glands.
In a nutshell, one of the biggest benefits of CBD supplementation seems to be to help regulate the stress response- both physical and mental stress. There are some endocannabinoids that naturally occur in the human body. Others can be supplemented with products like CBD, which is currently available as both a topical ointment and an oral supplement.
