Have you ever wondered the origin of the old adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”? The phrase appears to have originated in Wales in 1860s. The first version is recorded to be, “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Over the years it appears to have changed a few times, reaching its final version in 1922.1

As we all know apples come from a tree. The skin color may vary, but below that skin a juicy flesh with seeds inside, which is actually what defines a fruit. Apples contain a number of vitamins and nutrients, namely vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B6, niacin, iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. On top of that, they have additional antioxidants, fiber and are free of sodium, cholesterol and fat.2 That is one impressive fruit!
